agenda of rebuilding the cultural nation？ This paper compares the two ways out of
the “primitive society” led by Bronislaw Malinowski and the cultural theory of the
Chinese Community Study. Malinowski raised a deeply presentist idea of culture
contact which theorized contact into a generative mechanism of culture by its own.
Malinowski’s way eventually joined an internationalist regime which downplayed the
role of sovereign state and blurred the boundary between civility and primitivity. In
contrary， the critiques of internationalism among Chinese intellectuals after the
WWI provoked the community study to direct the exodus of the primitive society
into renewed studies of frontiers， a powerful sociological path towards nation
building in the cultural sense. The correspondence between community and frontier
politics generated a dynamic analysis of the cultural boundary and therefore
extended community into the cultural constitution of nation. Methodologically， this
paper tries to depart from the two major frameworks of writing disciplinary history:
reception and contact， and tries to rewrite the exchanges between intellectual
thoughts from a sympathist perspective， i.e. the common sensibility of the
intellectuals on world changes and theoretical minds. This perspective might help
present the cosmopolitan nature of the Chinese academic histories.

一、 引言

过去 20 年左右的学科史研究，印证了作为中国社区研究的思想奠
基者之一吴文藻（ 2010i：5）在《社会学丛刊》发刊词中的基本设想：社区
研究一方面要提供对于中国社会各个方面的经验描述与分析， 另一方
面也要提供基础性的理论，因为“社会学便是社区的比较研究”，而社区
则是比较社会学“概念格局”（ conceptual scheme）中的一环。
作为经验分析， 社区研究在现代中国社会学中的历史地位已得到
较为充分的关注。 围绕社区研究与社会调查的关系（李章鹏，2008；吕
文 浩 ，2008）、社 区 调 查 中 人 文 区 位 学 的 内 涵（侯 俊 丹 ，2018； 王 铭 铭 ，
2021）以及由社区研究所发展出的边疆民族调查与研究路径（杨清媚，
2010；王 铭 铭 ，2005；田 耕 ，2019）等 议题 ，研 究 者 们 已 经 进 行 了 富 有 成
效的讨论。
